Eight Power Tool Precautions To Keep In Mind

No matter how beneficial these power tools can be, we still cannot deny the fact that operating one can be hazardous. Remember that if you used them improperly, these power tools can be dangerous and injurious. So here are some basic power tool precautions that each power tool operator should know.

1. If you are going to operate an electric powered tool, make sure that everything on you and around you is dry. Before you plug it in, check if your work area doesn't have any wet spots or puddles of water either on the floor or on the table. Then check yourself; see if you are not wearing anything wet like wet shoes and wet coveralls.

Lastly, check if your hands are dry. It is important that you are all dry when using electric powered tools because water is a conductor of electricity. Keeping yourself dry and your work area dry will reduce the risk of electrocution.

2. Some power tools have moving parts like belts, gears, wheels and even blades. When a tool has moving parts it should be guarded as much as possible. These moving parts often have guards that are used to cover them.

These guards should be kept down when using power tools because these will protect them from cutting themselves with a rotating blade, getting hit with flying chunks of wood or getting burned from sparks generated by metal to metal contact. So if your power tool has moving parts, always keep the guard down especially when you are using it.

3. Some power tools have safety switches that are located in areas that are easily accessible. These safety switches are used to immediately cut off power if the main switch fails or if something goes wrong with the tool.

To protect yourself, you must learn the location and type of safety switch your tool has. Familiarize yourself with its function as well. Knowing how to operate the safety switch and learning where it is located will keep you from panicking in case something goes wrong.

4. Construction companies have rules on work gear. These gears are designed to protect you from the hazards at work. So before you handle any type of power tool, make sure that you don on the appropriate type of gear like gloves, masks and safety goggles.

Safety goggles or face shield are of utmost importance especially if you are using power abrasive wheel tools. These types of tools are capable of making chunks of wood, concrete or steel fly.

5. Tools like nail guns, drills and other pneumatic powered tools should not be pointed at anyone. The risk of accidentally discharging this type of tool while pointed at someone or to yourself is very high. So to keep this from happening, avoid pointing pneumatic powered tools at anyone or to yourself.

6. Power tools have limits and using them beyond this can have disastrous results. Always operate power tools according to the design specification or according to its limitation.

7. When not in use and before maintenance, power tools should be disconnected from the main power and should be turned off at all times. This will prevent one from accidentally turning on a particular tool while cleaning it.

8. Always check tools for damages like chipped or dull cutting wheels, torn wires, defective guards, etc. Remember that power tools should be kept in tip top shape in order to keep it from malfunctioning. Power tools tend to malfunction if damaged parts are left alone.
